Day at the Museums Part 2

During my visit to the V&A (see yesterday's post here), i came across the Japan exhibition in the Toshiba Gallery. Now this benefited both me and the boy...he was off dreaming about being a Samurai. And i was happy gazing at the 'Kitty and the Bulldog' exhibit which explored Lolita fashion and the influence of Britain.

Lolita fashion is a radical form of street style that emerged in Japan in the 1990's. Born out of Hello Kitty cuteness, Lolita girls were instantly recognisable by their doll like make up, frilly skirts, headgear, ribbons and lace. The exhibition explores how British culture (Alice in Wonderland, Glam Rock, Gothic Punk and Vivienne Westwood) heavily influences the Lolita style. Check out my pics - i thought it was really cool! I love Japanese fashion - adventurous and unique. I'm inspired!

Sweet Lolita...the most instantly recognisable of all the looks....

Alice in Wonderland heavily influencing the fashion.....

Gothic Lolita, check out the cute little cross bag...

Punk Lolita...i kinda like the cat bag....Vivienne Westwood meets punky kitty!

An example of how Lolita fashion (punk influence here) changed more traditional styles of dress into something modern. Quite striking (or scary depending on your taste).
